Our Media... Good, Bad or What?

I hate Pakistan! What in Pakistan! Go abroad Pakistan main kuch nahin hai! Why didn't you go to australia you are such a fool! Pakistan wont survive the coming years! Pakistan is bad! No electricity, expensive food, expensive petrol! I hate Pakistan!

Does it sound familiar? I probably guess it does, right.

But I grew up in Pakistan, we never used to say or hear these things in the past. Everyone at our childhood was a die hard Pakistani. We used to say proudly I am a Pakistani. Everyone was willing to give his life for our beloved country. Things were good and there was no tension.

Where as now, every person is tense. No one seems calm, there is a feeling that like we belong to no place, we feel ashamed in saying that we are from Pakistan and everyone is cursing the country and tells everyone there is no future here.

What brought such a change to the mentality of people. What made people hate their country?

Alot many reasons can be associated to it but one of the reason which i would like to associate is media! All the news channels, newspaper, radio, internet... all these are responsible for this thinking. When do a country doesn't have problems! which country doesn't have problems? but people don't think like this about their country.

In the past there were problems in our country as well. There was dictatorship, there were other things as well but only media was not open to tell each and every small detail to people sometime even exaggerating it. The open media which is chaotic now, it just everyday pours lots of things about how bad our officials are, how bad our politicians are, how bad things are. So much that everyone just hate the country.

If some riot happened in karachi is it necessary that i know it? will it make a difference to the country? If some bomb blasted in Sadar rwp will it do any good each and every person of our country know about it? Will it do any good? Will it change the situation?
No it wont but it will affect our minds, minds of our people. It will create a sense of fear and disparity in us. And we will be tempted to leave our country to find peace somwhere else.

Its time for our officials i think to start censoring the media, I think our media should only tell the good things that are happening in our country. At this time we want high hopes for the people, sense of nationalism, integrity and love for our country. We need men who want to fight for their country willing to give their life for the country.

There were people going abroad, studying there settling there but as the media has made everyone fearful more and more people are leaving the country and people fear to get back and settle in the homeland. Businessmen don't want to invest here because of the sense of volatility.

We have excellent doctors, scientist, engineers, graphic designers and people of all profession working abroad. I just wish all of them come back to Pakistan and start working here. Yes, they will face a lot of problem but their names will live on as the people who brought the change. These foreign countries don't need us but we need them, where as our country need able men.

PS: I had to stop myself from writing alot of things else this post would have taken a long time to write. I would like a healthy discussion on this post

i think media is the only source left in pak which makez the politics and government look a little bit transparent..
other wise like in the past the government will do wht ever the hell it wants to do and no body(obviously except the people affected by it) will ever know.
if u wanna blame some one blame the ruthless, characterless, corrupt and manipulating army of ours.

The freedom of speech and open access to information are absolute necessities for a country as they ensure the effectiveness of democratic process. And act as a safeguard against any individual or institution crossing their limits without fear of public repercussions.

The point you are raising has got more to do with journalistic sensationalism. Where news are made into a thriller and facts are distorted with emotional statements.

I still remember how Geo destroyed Pakistan's poultry industry by creating a baseless hype regarding birdflu.

And how on a Karachi blast geo showed peoples body without head, only fingers parts, people dying after bomb blast. Which is against all standards of proper reporting.

They depend on sensationalism so much that even if something doesn't happen it pakistan. Still they find something and keep shoving it in everyones face. There was peace in Pakland but a blast in Iran killed 11ppl. Geo kept reporting it on and on in new bulletins and slide bar for the whole day. What was the purpose or relevance?

Nobody has the right to deny the public access to facts, the line only has to be drawn against sensationalism.

@KHOBEB:

Thats what i was talking about. We only blame what media tells you to blame, We never blame ourselves. How many bad things we do daily? How much use of our position we take advantage of? But No only politicians and army is bad!!!

@Usman:

The thing you are talking about is absolutely true. but thats one other topic.
What i am referring to here is hiding some of the news and presenting some. Because such news present a bad image of our country infront of our eyes as well as others. We need progress, tension free environment, openness but we are under constant threat of terror.

I read a very nice statement somewhere and it was written "If it were not for the media the very word Terrorism would vanish from society"

let me give you an personal example, when i turn on tv and watch the news that some X politician looted the country of such rupees, Such Y politician after doing big fraud ran from pakistan, some blast there some blast and so many people killed there. Us attacked our posts and we did nothing and so on so forth i stand up from there with a grim heart and with a feeling what will i be able to do in this country! nothing is good here i should go abroad.

But when i read the page of CITY NEWS of the newspaper "THE NEWS" i feel very happy. They tell us news about traffic police fining people on helmets, seatbelts and talking on mobile. New children park made in F5, similar plan in lake view park. An indigenous invention of car anti-theft system, money spend to make art gallery and museum and so on and so forth. I really become very happy and feel that pakistan i on road of good progress and i should also play my good role in it.

As a general rule, people like to complain. We say we don't, but we do. We watch scary movies even though we're covering our eyes half the time screaming about how dumb the characters are. We can't stop listening to talk shows even though we're dismayed at what the pundits say. We go to "libraries" even though we insist we'll never meet anyone worth our time.

We also can't resist horrible media coverage . Real or fictitious, the awful at times media coverage are the car wrecks that make us rubberneck, disgusted by what we see but in awe of their grotesqueness, they allow our society to develop more insight into everyday topics leading to the initiation of intellectual dialog, greater awareness of the surroundings, a much greater transparency between species, a more "alive" feeling in the broader sense, etc - in short, media is the single most influential factor differentiating our centuries from the ancient times and to do without media in present times no matter how mentally injurious it can be at times, is comparable to living without air !

Geo Media !

Highlighting the problems is the first step towards solution! Some people get lost in only highlighting the problems but others still go ahread. Good or bad problems have to be identified. Government has to be blamed. Ministers have to be taken to task! These are mere necessities of putting the system back on track (unfortunately system can be distroyed starting from same cross road too).
